The Oneness of God
I. God is One, there is
no other God.
- The LORD our God is
one LORD.
Deuteronomy 6:4
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is
one LORD
- God is Alone in
heaven above and in the earth beneath
there is no other
Deuteronomy 4:35, 39
Unto thee it was shewed, that thou
mightest know that the LORD he is God;
there is none else beside him.
Know therefore this day, and consider it
in thine heart, that the LORD he is God
in heaven above, and upon the earth
beneath: there is none else.
- All the people of
the earth should know that there is no
other God but One.
1 Kings 8:60
That all the people of the earth may know
that the LORD is God, and that there is none
else.
Isaiah 45:5
I am the LORD, and there is none else,
there is no God beside me: I girded thee,
though thou hast not known me:
Isaiah 45:6
That they may know from the rising of the
sun, and from the west, that there is none
beside me. I am the LORD, and there
is none else.
- There is ONLY ONE
God who created the heavens and formed
the earth and He did it alone.
Isaiah 44:24
Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he
that formed thee from the womb, I am the
LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth
forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth
abroad the earth by myself;
Isaiah 45:18
For thus saith the LORD that created
the heavens; God himself that formed
the earth and made it; he hath
established it, he created it not in
vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am
the LORD; and there is none else.
- God Alone is the
Saviour, we look to Him only for
Salvation:
Isaiah 45:21
Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let
them take counsel together: who hath
declared this from ancient time? who hath
told it from that time? have not I the
LORD? and there is no God else beside
me; a just God and a Saviour;
there is none beside me.
Isaiah 45:22
Look unto me, and be ye saved, all
the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there
is none else.
Isaiah 46:9
Remember the former things of old: for I
am God, and there is none else; I
am God, and there is none like me,
II. God
is Spirit. He has no physical form and
there is no limit to His Existence.
- God as a Spirit
does not have a physical form, mankind
cannot see God unless He manifests
Himself in the physical world.
John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship
him must worship him in spirit and in
truth.
Luke 24:39
Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I
myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit
hath not flesh and bones, as ye see
me have.
John 1:18
No man hath seen God at any time,
the only begotten Son, which is in the
bosom of the Father, he hath declared
him.
1 Timothy 1:18
Now unto the King eternal, immortal,
invisible, the only wise God, be
honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen
1 John 4:12
No man hath seen God at any time.
If we love one another, God dwelleth in
us, and his love is perfected in us.
Exodus 33:20
And he said, Thou canst not see my face:
for there shall no man see me, and
live.
John 5:37
And the Father himself, which hath sent
me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have
neither heard His voice at any time,
nor seen His shape.
III.
God's name has been a secret since the foundation of the world.
- He is the God of unreachable riches. He is YHWH, The
Self-Existing One. His glory cannot be
comprehend by a frail human mind. That is
why God told Moses:
Exodus 33:20
And he said, Thou canst not see my face:
for there shall no man see me, and
live.
Throughout the Old Testament when men
would see God, it was not seeing Him in
His Glory, but simply a manifestation of
the Spirit in a physical shape. In
theological terms we refer to this as a
"theophany" meaning God takes a
physical shape. Understanding this
concept, we can understand why Biblical
characters could say they saw God, and
were afraid to die because of it, but God
reassured that they would not die, for
what they saw was a manifestation of
God's Spirit. Notice that these
characters would ask for the name of God.
That is very important. God only revealed
Himself as YHWH or IAM that IAM.
Exodus 3:14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM:
and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the
children of Israel, I AM hath sent me
unto you.
In Hebrew this term is YHWH. Self existing One. The English Translation is
YAHWEH or JEHOVAH.
Genesis 32:30
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I
pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore
is it that thou dost ask after my name?
And he blessed him there.
And Jacob called the name of the place
Peniel: for I have seen God face to face,
and my life is preserved.
What Jacob saw and even wrestled with was
an angel of the LORD, meaning that God's
Spirit was manifested in an physical form
to deal with Jacob.
Genesis 32:24
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled
a man with him until the breaking of
the day.
There are many more examples of God's
manifestation, but in this study we will
only cover one more.
Judges 13
You really have to read the whole chapter
to understand this example. We will
summarize the chapter: This chapter deals
with Samon's father Manoah and Manoah's
wife. She had been visited by an Angel of
the LORD, and was told that even though
she was barren God had chosen to allow
them to conceive. Manaoah, wanting more
details about raising this special son
(He was to be kept holy from birth.)
sought the LORD to appear to them again.
Now we will pick up at verse 17:
Judges 13:17-18
And Manoah said unto the angel of the
LORD, What is thy name, that when thy
sayings come to pass we may do thee
honour?
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why
askest thou thus after my name, seeing it
is secret?
Then in verse 22:
Judges 13:22
And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall
surely die, because we have seen God.
- From these examples
we can conclude
1. God's Spirit has never been seen by a
human being. (John 1:18)
2. God has manifest Himself to man
through physical means.(1 Tim 3:16)
3. The name of God has been a secret to
mankind from the beginning of the world.
Jacob asked for it (Genesis 32:29) as
well as Manoah(Judges 13:18), and both
were not allowed to have it.
Isaiah 62:2
And the Gentiles shall see thy
righteousness, and all kings thy glory:
and thou shalt be called by a new name,
which the mouth of the LORD shall name.
So what is the name? We are going to move
on to the New Testament, and study how
God will show His glory to the Gentiles,
and reveal the (secret)new name.(John
1:12)
IV. God
in the New Testament
- God is both our
Father and our Redeemer
Isaiah 63:16
Doubtless thou art our father, though
Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel
acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art
our father, our redeemer; thy name is
from everlasting.
- God, the Holy One
of Israel is in the midst of His people,
He is their Salvation!
Isaiah 12:2
Behold, God is my salvation; I will
trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD
JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he
also is become my salvation.
Isaiah 12:6
Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of
Zion: for great is the Holy One of
Israel in the midst of thee.
How did this take place? How did God
become Salvation? To understand we must
understand what it took to remit sin.
Hebrews 9:22
And almost all things are by the law
purged with blood; and without
shedding of blood is no remission.
- God is a Spirit
(John 4:24), a Spirit hath not flesh and
bones (Luke 24:39).
Therefore, God could not be Salvation
unless He had blood.
2 Corinthians 5:19
To wit, that God was in Christ,
reconciling the world unto himself,
not imputing their trespasses unto them;
and hath committed unto us the word of
reconciliation.
Romans 8:3
For what the law could not do, in that it
was weak through the flesh, God sending
his own Son in the likeness of sinful
flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the
flesh:
Galatians 4:4
But when the fulness of the time was
come, God sent forth his Son, made of a
woman, made under the law,
1 Timothy 3:16
And without controversy great is the
mystery of godliness: God was manifest
in the flesh, justified in the
Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the
Gentiles, believed on in the world,
received up into glory.
- God "sent His
Son" does not mean God sent
another... it means God became flesh..
the Spirit bore the human child and lived
in Him.
John 14:8-10
Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the
Father, and it sufficeth us.
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long
time with you, and yet hast thou not
known me, Philip? he that hath
seen me hath seen the Father; and how
sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Believest thou not that I am in the
Father, and the Father in me? the words
that I speak unto you I speak not of
myself: but the Father that dwelleth
in me, he doeth the works.
V.Jesus
Christ the Immanuel.
- Isaiah 62:2
fulfilled in Matthew 1:21 !!!
Isaiah 62:2
And the Gentiles shall see thy
righteousness, and all kings thy glory:
and thou shalt be called by a new
name, which the mouth of the LORD shall
name.
Matthew 1:21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou
shalt call his name JESUS: for he
shall save his people from their sins.
Who gave that name to Joseph? Was it a
human being? No it was the Angel of the
LORD... Now the name is given. It was
held from Manoah, it was held from Jacob,
but now it is revealed from the mouth of
the LORD.
Matthew 1:20
But while he thought on these things,
behold, the angel of the LORD
appeared unto him in a dream, saying,
Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to
take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Ghost.
Through the manifestation of God in human
flesh, the NAME of God is revealed.
... AND thou shalt call HIS name JESUS!!!
In Hebrew the name is YHWHSHUA meaning
"I AM SALVATION".
In English it is pronounced
"YAHSHUA" or JESUS.. Meaning
JEHOVAH-SALVATION.
- This fufills Isaiah
7:14 in Matthew 1:23
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you
a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive,
and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel.
Matthew 1:23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and
shall bring forth a son, and they shall call
his name Emmanuel, which being
interpreted is, God with us.
- Emmanuel = God with
us, and Jesus = Emmanuel, then Jesus =
God with us!!!!!!
Col 2:8-9
Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit, after the
tradition of men, after the rudiments of
the world, and not after Christ. For in
him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead
bodily.
1 Corinthians 15:47
The first man (Adam) is of the earth,
earthy; the second man(Jesus Christ) is
the LORD from heaven.
- If Jesus is the
Redeemer, then He must be our Father!
Isaiah 63:16
Doubtless thou art our father, though
Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel
acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art
our father, our redeemer; thy name is
from everlasting.
Matthew 23:37
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest
the prophets, and stonest them which are
sent unto thee, how often would I have
gathered thy children together, even
as a hen gathereth her chickens under her
wings, and ye would not!
John 10:30
I and my Father are one.
- He is ONE God and
His name is ONE!
Zechariah 14:9
And the LORD shall be king over all the
earth: in that day shall there be one
LORD, and his name one.
VI The
Humanity and the Divinity of Jesus Christ
Who died at Calvary? Can we say that God
can die? GOD is a SPIRIT. (John 4:24) but
Christ was the image of the invisble GOD
(Col 1:15) It was GOD in Christ
reconciling the world unto himself.(2 Cor
5:19)
He is ONE. But as ONE infinite Spirit he
can manifest himself to mankind in any
way He wishes. Questions arise about the
Humanity of Christ quite often.. Here are
a few we think will help us understand.
Why Did Jesus:
1. Pray to the Father-- why would Jesus
pray to God if He is God?
2. Fast? Does God need to fast?
3. Be Tempted by Satan... God cannot be
tempted?
4. Say that He didn't know all things
that the Father knew?
5. Teach the greatest commandment is Deut
6:4, and then told the crowd to believe
on Him (John 8:24)? (Read Mark 12:29)
6. Claim all Power in Heaven and Earth?
(Matt 28:19)
7. Accept worship from human
beings...(Matt 2:11) No one but God the
Father can have worship. (Exodus 20:4,
John 4:21,Matt 4:10)
8.Claim to be First and Last, Alpha and
Omega.(Rev 1:8) but the Father was
(Isaiah 43:10 44:6)
9. Called the Creator by Paul (Col
1:15-17) When The Father said He ALONE
was creator (Isa 45:18)
10. Claim to be IN us(John 14:20 Col
1:27), when it is the Holy Ghost that is
in us.(Acts 1:8)
- THE Answer?
The answer is not that God is Three
Persons.. There is not ONE verse in the
entire Bible that states that.
The truth to it all is that God is the
Father in Creation, The Son in
Redemption, and the Holy Ghost in
Regeneration or in dealing with mankind.
And revealed his name to us. (Proverbs
30:4) He is our Father and our Redeemer
(Isa 63:16) The "Son Of God" is
a role that GOD became, or mode of
manifestation. He didn't send another
person to save us.. He is the only
SAVIOUR. (Isa 43:11) So in taking on the
flesh, it is much like a person putting
on a coat. I can change clothes but it
doesn't make me a different person. GOD
put on Human Flesh and that human flesh
was Christ. He revealed HIS full name to
us in that Human Body. In Exodus 3:14,
When Moses asked the LORD whom should he
say sent him, The LORD responded with- I
AM that I AM, you just tell them I AM
hath sent you. What I will point out to
you here is that in Hebrew "I
AM" is translated YHWH! Or in
English pronunciation Yahweh, or in
modern English times, Jehovah. The reason
it is spelled with no vowels as YHWH is
because the Hebrew language has no
vowels. So men over the years have added
appropriate vowels to make a word that
could be pronounced in English. If we
realize that Yahweh means I AM, then we
will understand why the LORD chose to use
this statement with Moses. When Abraham
was spared from killing his only son, he
called the place Jehovah-jireh, (or YHWH
YIREH) which in English can mean "I
AM PROVIDER" This is a cycle we see
throughout the old testament, as the LORD
revealed things to His people, the
revelation of which He was became
clearer. The fulfillment of the Lord's
revelation doesn't occur until the book
of Matthew. God, as a Spirit, fully
reveals himself to mankind as the Lamb of
God, Jesus Christ. This becomes the
revelation of all revelations of which
God is, YHWHSHUA or "I AM
SALVATION" (John 8:58) Or in English
today JESUS ....... Jehovah SAVIOUR!!!
Another way to see this is
:God as
The Father created us.
The Son redeemed us.
The Holy Ghost sanctifies born again
believers.
The burning bush talked to Moses.
The three men talked to Abraham and at
the same time saved Lot and his family
from Sodom.
The fourth man in the fire danced with
the Hebrew boys.
The pillar of cloud led the Israelites.
An angel wrestled with Jacob.
So, you can see that God can reveal
himself to mankind in any form, and at
any time which ever way he chooses. When
he became Man, (The Incarnation) He also
took on the nature of man. He conceived the flesh free from the curse of Adam by
conceiving Christ with no human father.
Therefore Christ is the Second Adam and
knew no sin. The reason he had to fast,
is because when GOD took on this flesh,
he took on the will of this flesh. Jesus
said "not my will but Thou will be
done.. " In other words the flesh
had to submit to the Spirit (the Father).
Jesus Christ as a man was as human as you
and I, but He Knew NO SIN, and ALL of the
FULLNESS of GOD dwelleth in HIM (Col
2:9). He had to be fully human to be able
to take our place at Calvary to shed
blood, for without blood their is no
remission of sin. The flesh that died at Calvary was vacated by the Spirit, which
resurrected it 3 days later. This is why
the flesh had to pray, and fast, and why
the flesh was limited. (For he was made
of a woman and under the Law.. Gal 4:4)
2 Corinthians 5:19
To wit that GOD was IN CHRIST
reconciling the world unto Himself.
It is so important to understand this..
for we will die in our sins without
knowing this!
John 8:24
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall
die in your sins: for if ye believe not
that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Col 2:8-10
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit, after the
tradition of men, after the rudiments of
the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in
him dwelleth all the fulness of the
Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete
in him, which is the head of all
principality and power:
|
