·       Identify the writers of the four books of the Gospel and discuss their backgrounds.

Gospel Writer

Background

Matthew

Publican (tax collector) from the tribe of Levi, forsook all he had and became self-effaced in humility in his adoration for Jesus Christ.  His Gospel is known as the most widely read book in all the world, being the first book of the New Testament.  The Gospel was originally written in Hebrew, but later translated into Greek by Matthew himself.  His background as a Publican gave him the keen since of record keeping,  which is reflected in this Gospel.

Mark

Cousin of Barnabas (Colossians 4:10), from the tribe of Levi (Acts 12:12) a convert of Apostle Peter (1 Peter 5:13) Also known as John Mark.  Disappointed Apostle Paul for leaving him on his first missionary journey, however later in life was profitable to his ministry and became one of Paul’s intimate and beloved helpers.  His Gospel was written and published in Rome between 60 and 70 AD

Luke

Beloved Physician (Colossians 4:14), Paul’s fellow worker (Philemon 24 and 2 Tim 4:11) travelling in the 2nd and 3rd Missionary Journeys including Paul’s imprisonment and also fellow companion worker with Mark.  His Gospel was written in 60 AD in Caesarea, while Paul was in prison.  The book of Acts is considered volume 2 of his gospel, both volumes being addressed to Theophilus, a Roman Official of high rank, having the title of “Most Excellent”, perhaps indicating that he was a convert of Paul that used his own resources to fund the expense of publication of Luke’s two books in having copied made for many churches.

John

Son of Zebedee, a Jewish business man owned a fishing business that employed “hired servants” (Mark 1:16-20) owned a house in Capernaum, and a house in Jerusalem (John 19:27) and was a personal acquaintance of the high priest (John 18:15-16) and a  disciple of John the Baptist (John 1:35, 40), nicknamed by Jesus as the son of Thunder (Mark 3:17) which seems to imply he had a vehement, violent temper, which he was able to overcome being filled with the Holy Ghost.  He was one of the 3 inner circle disciples along with Peter and James and referred to as the Apostle “Whom Jesus Loved”.  His Gospel was written later than the others , being written and published in 90 AD.

·       Explain the divergences in the genealogy of Jesus as presented in Matthew and in Luke.

Matthew’s lineage is in ascending order, from Adam to Christ through the KINGS bloodline.  This bloodline emphasizes the Kingship of Christ as it travels through the line of Judah (prophecy in Micah 5:2) through the kings to Joseph.  However, the true Kingship of the LORD as per the Holy Ghost being His true Father, so the lineage is emphasizing his Kingship as the Son of David.  He is also the LORD of David because of the fact that He was God manifest in the flesh.

·       Discuss the events surrounding the birth and early years of Jesus.

Joseph was given the name by the MOUTH of the Lord.  Isaiah 62:2 – Matthew 1:18-23

Herod was seeking to kill the Messiah because of the counsel of his wise men, seeing him as a threat to his dominion.  (Typed by the Exodus account of Moses)

Even though Joseph was challenged by his physical circumstances, he was absolutely in the will of God.  Every step he took from the census and taxes that he had to travel to Bethlehem to the fact that there was no inn available in town, setup the LORD to have the birth in the exact place and circumstances that were already foretold in scripture.

·       Cite the significance of the baptism of Jesus.

The baptism of Jesus was absolutely a necessity to forever give the example of the water and Spirit baptism.  He told John that it was necessary for him to be baptized by John to “fufill ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS”.  It was to give a picture to all of the Church age and disciples of Jesus Christ that they should have a born again experience in the same manner, a birth in water (water baptism) and a birth of the Spirit (descending upon the believer) the voice of God saying this is my BELOVED Son in whom I am well pleased is showing that we are only a child of God once we obey being baptized.

The picture of the baptism is NOT a picture of the “trinity”.  The scripture teaches what the voice and the spirit descending as a dove was for:

John 1:32-33

(32)  And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

(33)  And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

The Spirit descended AS A DOVE; the Spirit is NOT A DOVE as so many traditional accounts seem to display this scene.  The Spirit descending AS A DOVE is a sign to John the Baptist that this was the One who would baptize with the Spirit, it is also an example to all believers that follow Christ, to expect a Spirit Baptism after being water baptized, although in some cases folks do receive the Spirit baptism before the water Baptism.  Nevertheless, whatever the case may be, Jesus gave the fulfillment of all righteousness as He said He was doing, He gave the example of being born of the water and of the Spirit for all to see.

Jesus was fully God from birth, there was no significance of this baptism concerning His deity, and it was purely for example to all believers that following the LORD involves being water and Spirit baptized.  Jesus submitted to water Baptism and to the ministry of John the Baptist as an example of what all believers should do.

·       Explain the events of the temptation of Jesus at the conclusion of His 40-day fast.

·

Jesus being the second Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45-47) He overcame the items that caused the first Adam to fall.

Genesis 3:6

(6)  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

1 John 2:16

(16)  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Jesus overcame the devil’s temptations by the word of God. “IT IS WRITTEN” was part of every response to the devil.

·       Discuss the Biblical role of angels in the New Testament.

Hebrews 1:14

(14)  Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Angels are ministering spirits sent forth to minister to the heirs of salvation.  Angels are obedient to the call of God and minister obedience to the word of God.   Demons are fallen angels, thereby disobedient to their calling; they minister to humanity to disobey God.  It is interesting that in Revelation, the message is given and written to the “Angel” of each Church.  The purpose of the ministry of the Church matches the call of the angels.  Therefore, the Angel of the LORD is almost interchangeable as the “man of God”.  This is interesting when reading the account of Lot’s family in Genesis 16.  The response of Lot’s family can be comparable to the response of the children of Israel to the Prophets, as we can look to the present response of folks to the ministry of the Church.

·       Identify and describe the duration, chronology and main events of the Galilean Ministry, including:

These teachings are meant for Holy Ghost filled believers.  Without being filled with the Holy Ghost, the power to obey these principles in whole is impossible.  It is typed by the Exodus account of Moses giving the Law.

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

The Sermon on the Mount is the truth and fundamentals that are part of the Holy Ghost walk.

-Principles that don’t make sense in the natural sense.  The Beatitudes demonstrate the opposing realties of the Spiritual and natural.

Matthew 5:3-12

(3)  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

(4)  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

(5)  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

(6)  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

(7)  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

(8)  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

(9)  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

(10)  Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

(11)  Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

(12)  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Matthew 10:1-4

(1)  And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

(2)  Now the names of the twelve apostles are these;  The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

(3)  Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

(4)  Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Matthew 12:30-31

(30)  He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

(31)  Wherefore I say unto you,  All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

1.      The Sower and the Soils (13:1-9)

¼ of ground that is sowed is good ground.

The ground represents the heart of each man.

Each ground (heart) must strive and continue in the faith to allow seed to produce fruit, the process is never something that can be ignored or stalled.

“You can only stop peddling the bike for so long until it loses it momentum and the bike falls over.”

The ground (heart) requires daily maintenance to stay pure and produce good fruit.

2.      The Wheat and the Tares (13:24-30)

God does not allow the tares to be plucked up before the harvest, specifically because the LORD of the harvest does not want the wheat to get plucked up.  Harvest is where the tares are reaped and separated from the wheat, on the threshing floor (purging).

What is the difference between wheat and tares?  Wheat has fruit, and is bowed over during its growth, the tare are like weeds, growing straight up with no burden, no fruit.

3.      The Mustard Seed (13:31-32)

Matthew 13:32

(32)  Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

The Word of God is effective.  When the Word finds good ground, and an environment that allows the seed to grow, it will produce results.  Throughout the child of God’s life, any portion of God’s Word may seem to be tiny, any revelation of the Word may be a nugget, but the results of that seed can change an entire life.  The Will of God is for His Word to be able to grow in every heart of man, and become a healthy tree that is able to allow “birds of the air” to come lodge in the branches, meaning they become a blessing to others.

4.      The Leaven (13:33)

Matthew 13:33

(33)  Another parable spake he unto them;  The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

Again the power of a small portion of the kingdom is like leaven will leaven the entire loaf.

5.      The Hidden Treasure (13:44)

The man buys the FIELD.  Not the treasure, because HE SEES THE VALUE of the TREASURE.  The VALUE of the treasure is so HUGE to the man that he SELLETH ALL THAT HE HAS WITH JOY!!!! TO BUY THE FIELD!!!!

It also speaks of the necessity of digging into the Kingdom.  If you want to find the TREASURE, you have to dig.  We purchase the FIELD when we come into the kingdom, we must dig into it to get the TREASURE.

6.      The Costly Pearl (13:45-46)

Same concept as the hidden treasure, man selleth all that he has to buy the PEARL which is HUGE price.

7.      The Dragnet (13:47-50)

The Net catches good and bad vessels, must be separated at the shore.

      8. The Householder (13:52)

The same concept as the net, good and bad vessels separated when the house is cleaned.

The transfiguration represents the entire Bible.

Moses – Law

Elijah – Prophets

Jesus – Gospels

Peter- Acts

James – Epistles

John - Revelation

Peter’s confession in Matthew 16 is the “ROCK” upon which the Church (Acts 2:38 message) is built.  It is amazing that the answer to Psalm 110, and Mark 12:28 is given by Peter in Acts 2:35-39, He is both LORD and Christ.

This is what confounded the religious people and the question that Jesus posed to them that they were unable to answer, however Peter (having received the keys of the kingdom from Jesus) was able to answer, having received the Revelation of Jesus Christ from the Father (Holy Ghost).  Jesus told him “Flesh and blood has NOT revealed this unto you, but my Father which is in heaven…” (Matthew 16:19)

Also given to us by Christ in Revelation the last chapter:

Revelation 22:16

(16)  I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

)

The “keys” of the kingdom are blood, water, and Spirit (John 3:5 and 1 John 5:8) with the Revelation of Jesus Christ.  Example of it being unlocked, in Acts 2:35 Peter preaches the message of the Oneness of God and the deity of Jesus Christ, which pricked the hearts of the Jews, and explained the way to respond in Acts 2:38.

Matthew 20:25-28

(25)  But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

(26)  But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

(27)  And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

(28)  Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Matthew 21:6-16

(6)  And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,

(7)  And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

(8)  And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

(9)  And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

(10)  And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?

(11)  And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

(12)  And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

(13)  And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

(14)  And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

(15)  And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,

(16)  And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

Matthew 22:15-22

(15)  Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

(16)  And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

(17)  Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

(18)  But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

(19)  Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

(20)  And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

(21)  They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

(22)  When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

The woes Jesus pronounced on the scribes and Pharisees

Matthew 23:13-39

(13)  But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

(14)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

(15)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

(16)  Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

(17)  Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

(18)  And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

(19)  Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

(20)  Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

(21)  And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

(22)  And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

(23)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

(24)  Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

(25)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

(26)  Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

(27)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

(28)  Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

(29)  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

(30)  And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

(31)  Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

(32)  Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

(33)  Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

(34)  Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

(35)  That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

(36)  Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

(37)  O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

(38)  Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

(39)  For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
