Readings

Halley, pp. 608-640;  Galatians 1-II Thessalonians

·        Identify the theme of the Book of Galatians.

The theme of Galatians is grace for the Gentiles without circumcision.  (Chapter 1-5)

·        Describe the date, setting and occasion of the Book of Galatians.

The Church of Galatia was founded (between AD. 45-48) during Paul’s first Missionary Journey.

·        Describe Paul’s rejection of pluralism and his affirmation that there is only one Gospel.

Galatians 1:6-9

(6)  I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

(7)  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

(8)  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

(9)  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

·        Understand key Pauline teachings on Law and Grace.

The allegory of Isaac and Ishmael

Galatians 4:21-25

(21)  Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

(22)  For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

(23)  But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

(24)  Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

(25)  For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

Genesis 17:18

(18)  And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

Genesis 17:24-26

(24)  And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

(25)  And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

(26)  In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

God refused to use the firstborn according to the flesh, which is Ishmael.  The Arabs (Islam) trace their lineage back to Ishmael claiming him to be the firstborn of Abraham.  However the importance of this Spiritual example is in fact that God is not looking to the natural but the Spiritual.

The allegory=

Agar is the LAW of Mt. Sinai – answers to Jerusalem and is IN BONDAGE with her children.

Sara is GRACE and the birth of the Spirit – answers directly to HEAVEN and is free from the BONDAGE of the flesh.

Galatians 4:26-31

(26)  But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

(27)  For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

(28)  Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

(29)  But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

(30)  Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

(31)  So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Abraham asked God to use Ishmael, which is an example of the attitude of carnal believers.  There is the righteousness of loving his son, training him to sacrifice, training him to hunt, training him to worship, he had an investment in his firstborn son.  He was 99 years old when God told him that He would give him another son,  that would be the child of promise.  The KEY to this transaction – the child MUST be born of the MOTHER.  (Sara).  God would NOT accept a child even being trained to worship, raised by Abraham; it MUST be a CHILD OF PROMISE.

Food for thought – Sara is a type of the MOTHER, which is HEAVENLY JERUSALEM, the MOTHER OF US ALL.  This is speaking of the Church, therefore for a believer to be a TRUE child of God is not how long they are faithful to God, nor how well they were trained, or who was their mentor.  (Think of all the spiritual believers that claim to be great in God when in fact they haven’t even been born again yet).  The real child of God is BORN AGAIN, by MOTHER – this means God only sees those that are born again in the Apostolic Church, buried in Jesus name, filled with the Promise is in fact the real child of God.

·        Identify the theme of the Book of Ephesians.

Written to the Gentiles – ONENESS of the BODY, Universality of the Church

·        Describe the date, setting and occasion of the Book of Ephesians.

AD 61-63 while Paul was in prison written to the Church at Ephesus

·        Explore the importance of Ephesians chapter 4 in documenting the biblical doctrine of the Oneness of God.

Ephesians 4:4-6

(4)  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

(5)  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

(6)  One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Clearly gives us the understanding that there is one body (speaking of the Church and of the human body of Christ) one Spirit (Oneness teaching) one hope of your calling, One Faith (One Church).

The Holy Ghost – is the Father of all who is above, through all, and in YOU all.  The Holy Ghost and the Father are the same Spirit.

·        Identify the theme of the Book of Philippians.

“Missionary Letter” A response to the Church at Phillipi for their offering that was sent to him while he was in prison.

·        Describe the date, setting and occasion of the Book of Philippians.

AD 61-63 Written from Prison, encouragement to the Church that sent him offering

·        Identify the theme of the Book of Colossians.

Beware of Philosophy, Vain Deceit, Traditions of Men, and Rudiments of the World.

·        Describe the date, setting and occasion of the Book of Colossians.

AD 61-63 Written from prison, contending for the faith against heresy in Colossae

The Colossian Heresy was a mixture of Jewish, Greek, and Oriental religion, which came from a type of “higher thinking” cult.  These folks had come up with angelic worship, denying the divinity of Christ (possibly early formulations of trinitarian thought), and works based Salvation.

Colossians 1:15

(15)  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

Colossians 1:26-27

(26)  Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

(27)  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Ephesians 4:6 – The FATHER is in US

Colossian 1:27 – CHRIST in US

Romans 8:9 - The Spirit of GOD and the Spirit of Christ are the SAME Spirit.

As you continue to read Romans 8, Paul continues to talk about the Spirit, which is clearly the Baptism of the Holy Ghost working in a believer.

Colossians 2:8-19

(8)  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

* Contending for the Oneness Doctrine

 (9)  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

(10)  And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

(11)  In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

* Contending for baptism in Jesus Name for the Remission of Sin – the CIRCUMCISION of the New Testament

(12)  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

(13)  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

* Contending for “NO RESPECTOR of PERSONS”, the fact that no ORDINANCE can come against the born again saint

(14)  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

(15)  And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

* Contending for the SABBATH and DIETARY LAWS BEING FULFILLED in the BAPTISM of the HOLY GHOST

(16)  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

(17)  Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

* Contending for the Christ as the MEDIATOR (rejecting a major argument of the Colosse Heresy, and Marian worship)

(18)  Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

(19)  And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

Paul was absolutely not trinitarian in his thinking and in fact prophetically in this 2nd Chapter of Colossians was preparing the Church to refute it and other similar heresies that would attempt to seduce the saints.

Encouraging the persecuted believers who stood for the Gospel in this city even through death, the Epistle was written to encourage them that the dead believers would not be at a disadvantage for the coming of the Lord.  He mentions the rapture of the Church in this epistle (referred to as the GATHERING) 1 Thess. 4:16-18 which impacted the folks so much that they took it to the extreme in response to the Lord’s coming.

AD 51 -52

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

(16)  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

(17)  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

(18)  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

To refute the teaching of the “sudden and unexpecting” coming of the Lord, to explain that the second Coming of Christ was only AFTER the apostasy (great fall away) and revealing of the antichrist.

AD 52 – written a few weeks after I Thess. to further explain the coming of the Lord

2 Thessalonians 2:1-6

(1)  Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

(2)  That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

(3)  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

(4)  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

(5)  Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

(6)  And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

What witholdeth the coming of the LORD?  That HE MIGHT BE REVEALED in HIS TIME.  This is what the “he” or also can be translated as “it” of verse 7 is speaking.

2 Thessalonians 2:7

(7)  For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

Also another very important revelation is the fact that God can send men a strong delusion that they can believe and LIE and be DAMNED.
